The benefit of these is that they are usually pretty big, 2-4k Metals or sometimes more, and can last a pretty long time. In the real long term you have 2 options: Either spread your colony out and dig up all the 'shallow' deposits (which can be a pain if you have to travel far for them), or you can unlock 'deep' deposits (Metals icon with an orange background) by researching Deep Scanning (or using upgraded probes to deep scan) and Deep Metals Extraction (Either in the Robotics or Physics tree, can't remember which) which your Geologists can then dig up. You can mine 'shallow' deposits (Metals icon with a blue background) from the beginning of the game, but they will run out after a while, unless you luck out and get a while bunch of them near your colony. Once you're done digging the metal from the surface (or whilst you're doing it), the only real way to get more in the long term is with Metal Extractors manned by Geologists. That's pretty much the only way you could get more metal in a pinch, any other way is going to need some amount of investment. First thing to do if you haven't already would be to scan the entire surface and have your RC transporter(s) dig up all the metal deposits on the surface.
